Murtaza Shakir, MD
Dr. Shakir is a board-certified General Surgeon and Surgical Oncologist serving patients in Katy, Sugar Land, and Greater Houston. He completed his medical degree at Aga Khan University, followed by General Surgery residency at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, and a two-year Surgical Oncology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).
His additional fellowship training informs his approach to both common procedures such as hernia repair and gallbladder surgery and complex abdominal and cancer operations.

Do I always need surgery for a hernia or gallstones?
Not always. Some small hernias with few symptoms and gallstones that cause no symptoms can be watched. Surgery is usually advised when a hernia is painful, growing, or hard to push back in, or when gallstones cause attacks or complications.
How do I schedule a consultation?

What should I do in a medical emergency?
For severe abdominal pain, a hernia that is firm, painful, and will not go back in, vomiting with abdominal pain, or chest pain, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. The offices are not emergency facilities.
